After placing fourth in regional competition on Feb. 29, the Diamond Bar High School Science Olympiad Team will advance to State Championships on April 9 at Canyon High School in Anaheim.
Two teams in the Diamond Bar group took first place in two events during the regional competiton at Occidental College. Brandon Sim and Chris Lee took first place in technical problem solving and Sim and Ian Pan took first place in the Disease Detective event.
Physics teachers Angela Jensvold, Teresa Hebert, Richard Goya lead the 17-member team, which includes: Brandon Sim, Alex Chang, Kevin Zhang, Orrin Belden, Nimisha Ganesh, Ryan Ma, Curtis Wang, Ian Pan, Matthew Hapenney, Alan Li, Chris Lee, Richard Koh, Corey Chen, Christopher Chen. Willie Lo, Vincent Pang, and Grant Shao.
Earlier this year, teammembers Curtis Wang and Nimisha Ganesh were named 2010 Siemens Semi-Finalists alongside 298 other students nationwide.
The Science Olympiad, one of the nation's top science competitions, pits students against standards-based challenges and has around 6,000 teams in 49 states.
Olympiad teams prepare throughout the year for the tournaments that consist of a series of 23 team events in each division. The events cover skills in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.
