La Canada’s Collin Morikawa and Diamond Bar’s Jefferson Kao will play high school golf for at least one more week.

The duo advanced to the CIF Southern California SCGA state qualifier on Thursday at Brookside Golf Course. They finished among the top 28 individuals in Thursday afternoon’s CIF-Southern Section qualifier at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

Morikawa finished tied for eighth with a 4-over-par 76. Kao finished tied for 16th with a 6-over-par 78.

Thursday’s tournament matched the top two teams from the seven CIF-SS divisionals and the top 20 players from each of the CIF-SS individual tournaments. La Canada, as a team, and Diamond Bar’s Sean Hsu, failed to advance.

Only one player, Dana Hills’ Clay Feagler, broke par, with a 1-under-71. Harvard-Westlake’s Brandon Kewalramani, Westlake’s Matt Wolf and Palm Desert’s Jackson Polakov all shot an even-par-72.

Diamond Bar’s Hsu failed to advance with a 91.

La Canada finished second in the CIF-SS Northern Division tournament to advance to Thursday’s tournament. The Spartans finished 12th with a 420. Robert Stehlin shot an 82 an Adam Horne an 85 for the Spartans.

Westlake, which defeated La Canada in the divisional finals, won the tournament with 375. Palm Desert, San Marcos of Santa Barbara and Loyola also advanced.

Thursday’s tournament will match the top golfers and teams from the CIF’s Southern, L.A., San Diego and Central sections. The top nine individuals not on a team and the top three teams advance to the CIF State tournament June 3 at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
