2013 Graduate Tatum Lockett Gets Off On The Right Foot

Freshman Tatum Lockett scored the first two goals of her UCR career Sunday afternoon, with the final score proving to be the difference maker, as the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (1-1-0) defeated San Jose State, 2-1, in overtime.

The Spartans (0-2-0) took four of the first five shots on the day, and Estrada Lupita's attempt in the 22nd minute found the upper left-hand corner of the UCR net to give San Jose State an early 1-0 lead.

Following that score, Head Coach Nat Gonzalez made a series of substitutions sending Lockett into the match with 6:42 remaining in the period. It didn't take long for that strategic move to pay off, as less than a minute later, Briana Thomasson found Lockett with a pass, which the Diamond Bar, California native deposited into the upper right-hand corner, tying the score at one.

The Highlanders outshot the Spartans, 8-4, following San Jose State's goal, and won the corner kick battle 7-0, but they were unable to score throughout the remainder of regulation.

The Spartans controlled the ball at the start of overtime, and took a shot on goal with just five seconds gone in the bonus period, but UC Riverside keeper Elizabeth Silas came up with the save. Just 51 seconds later Lockett netted the game-winner thanks to a Sammy Arellano pass which she redirected past SJSU keeper, Sarah Peplinski.

Lockett became the first Highlanders player to score two goals in a match since Tessa Lennala scored a pair at Cal State Fullerton on October 26, 2008. She also became the 10th UC Riverside freshmen to score two goals in the same match, and the first since Kacie McElrath and Brittany Coulter both notched a pair vs. Nevada on August 29, 2004.
