Saakib Akbany of Diamond Bar High School has been named the winner of a National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship, one of more than 1,000 high school seniors to win corporate-sponsored awards.
Saakib, who wants to study environmental engineering, will receive the scholarship from Northrop Grumman Corp., based in Los Angeles, which annually supports Merit Scholarship awards for the sons and daughters of its employees, according to an announcement made today.
Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
National Merit Scholarship Corporation will name recipients of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships on May 6, and winners of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards on May 27 and July 13.
By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,600 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth about $34 million.
